How to - Make-up brush holder DIY style!
Hi My lovelies,
I hope your having a lovely weekend, I'm having a chilled out one at home this week as Mr R is working! :(
I love the Makeup Brush Holder because it makes my brushes easily accessible and stops them from getting dirty in my make-up bag.. win win!
In the pictures you will see that I worked on two jars as it was super quick.
Step One - Find the Jar
Find a nice wide jar that is low in height, it needs to be wide enough to store a few brushes and if you're like me then you end up having lots of wide brushes and just a few thin ones.
If it is quite low in height you can also squeeze more brushes in.
Nice clean Jar |
Step Two - Spray the Jar with a primer
I used a primer that I bought from Homebase It's called Zinsser B.I.N Primer Sealer & Stain Killer I love this stuff as it covers everything and it dries super quick. It is really fumey though so use a mask if you are in an enclosed area. Make sure you put a sheet or newspaper down too to stop the spray from going everywhere.
Spraying on the primer |
This spray is also great for when painting wood furniture, sometimes the wood bleeds through the paint and you can use this to cover those marks.
Also great on ceilings if it has marks from a previous leak and the list of uses goes on.................
Step Three - Paint with a chalk paint
This time round I used a Rust-oleum Chalk Paint in an Antique White colour that I purchased from Homebase, I already had some lying around and you do not need to use a lot.
I am a massive fan of this type of paint (Chalk Paint) because you do not have to prep the surface before hand, especially when painting wood. I did in this case because I was painting glass and I wasn't sure how well it would stick.
When painting with this paint, if you don't like the finish of the surface you can lightly sand with sandpaper to get a lovely chalky feeling finish.
Step Four - Decoration!
You can decorate this jar pretty much however you want, I decided that I wanted some sparkle and that I wanted my Initials on there.
To decorate my jar I used some bits that I had lying around from creating this picture frame and some Christmas decorations that I had made previously in the year
Most of my purchases were from HobbyCraft
Some Sparkly Silver and White Twine for the bow
Some stick on gems
And a glue gun
- I cut a strip of the silver paper and stuck it around the top
- I stuck the gems on in the shape of my initials
- Tied the bow at the side of the jar using the twine and glue gun
The finished piece |
Here are some other styles that I tested out:
But I still prefered the one with my initials 😊
Why don't you give this a go, it really is so simple and it looks effective too when all your nice pretty brushes are contained in one pot.

With Love
